The expedition base set is the first series of e-cards for the Pokémon Trading card game it released to japan back in December 1st 2001 and to English September 15 2002. This was also the first set to feature the new technical machine cards which play a role similar to items that have the same name by giving Pokémon new attacks to use. Each card has an attack listed on it and the Pokémon can use that listed attack during its turn but if the Pokémon doesn’t use that attack during the turn the card is discarded at the end of the turn for the player. During this expansion Pokémon power was split into two different groups. The first being Poké-Body and the second being Poké-Power. Poké-Body is always active unless there is a special effect which can block it. Poké-Power required it to be activated in order to be able to use it. This differed from the ones from Base Set which were active without having to announce or trigger them and could be triggered multiple at once.
During the release of Expedition Base Set new card designs
were updated and included a bunch of different changes. The left and bottom
borders got an increase in their size to help incorporate the dot code
technology which is used for the Nintendo e-Reader. That allowed players to
view data displayed on Pokédex and also let users play specific tunes in a
melody box as well as play a mini-game. They also had a secret hidden attack
for that Pokémon which could be used but the hidden attacks couldn’t be used
during tournament play. The card artwork window is also rounded on the left.
The rare holo cards had the Pokémon species, weight, and length moved to the
left. For non holo cards, they didn’t have the Pokémon’s species, weight, and
length. For both the rare holo as well as non holo cards included a unique ID
number which was located below the artwork window and was missing the Pokédex
entry. The illustrator was moved into the center on the bottom of the card and
the set symbol was located on the bottom right of the card.
Reverse Holofoil cards got changed to a plain refactor Holofoil. The number of cards in each booster got reduced from 11 Pokémon cards to 9 Pokémon cards. They included 5 common cards, 2 uncommon, 1 Reverse Holofoil, and either 1 rare or rare holo card. All of the holo cards also have a non holofoil version. This also was the first expansion that didn’t have a 1st edition version.
Pokemon Error Cards:
Alakazam: The "This power can't be used if..." text is italicized when it is not supposed to be.
Dugtrio: The Attack Energy cost symbols are larger than the standard size.
Gengar: The text for Gengar's Pokémon Power has a premature line break.
Charizard: This card tells the player to "Put Charizard on the Basic Pokémon" instead of "on the Stage 1 Pokémon".
Totodile: When Cyndaquil's card is scanned with the e-Reader, a "Cynda!" sound is added to the Melody Box. When Totodile is scanned, however, it adds a "Wani!" sound (as in Waninoko, Totodile's Japanese name) rather than "Toto!". As Chikorita and Pikachu (two other cards which received this effect) have the same English and Japanese names, it is unknown whether Totodile or Cyndaquil's card is the one that contains an error.
Energy Removal 2 and Multi Technical Machine 01: When these cards are scanned with the e-Reader, the TM01 card names the card's move as "Paralyzing Stare" instead of "Paralyzing Gaze" and the reader refers to "Energy Removal 2" as the ordinary "Energy Removal".
Darkness Energy: The card text incorrectly implies that it can add to damage done to Benched Pokémon, which normally cannot be increased.
